about

This song is inspired by Edward Hopper's painting Automat, but specifically by the idea that it is Suzanne Vega who is the subject. This was an attempt to write a song in her style, inspired by the painting.

lyrics

The bitter dregs of my last cup of coffee
remind me its dawn outside

Counting the coins in my pocket
right now in my head
Counting the times we have lain
and have lied in your bed

My fingers fold tiny scraps of paper
making birds to fly away
I line them up to be an audience
and wait for them to come alive

Tasting the scent on my lips
from the things I have said
Counting these coins and yet
hearing clocks ticking instead

It's a dark dark night
but sunrise is coming soon
It's a dark cold night
but sunrise is coming soon.
