Back to Basics

about

This song is an attempt to put into words my disgust at where we find ourselves. Originally written in 2010 days after the Cameron election win, the lyrics have sadly become more accurate to our situation.
It looks at immigration, the right wing obsession with a mythical happy "merry England" - borrowed from Kingsley Amiss' Lucky Jim.
The title goes back to the John Major speech where he started down the well worn path of the right of mythologising history. It seemed to fit.

lyrics

Lower portcullis, pull up the drawbridge
That's the English way
Ignore the facts, distrust the new.
It's just the English way

It's back to basics for us boys
Closing our ears to the disquieting noise

To the forecastle, sandbanks ahead
Drowning in money; cappuccino foam
Just like when roofer ruled
Drowning in money; cappuccino foam

It's back to basics for us boys
Closing our ears to the disquieting noise

Merry England's what they want
Looking on a Friday, it's what we've got
Be careful what you're wishing for
The boats won't save you from the rising tides

It's back to basics for us boys
Closing our ears to the disquieting noise
